6-month reflection using your planner: How to improve your performance

With the arrival of June, we’re officially halfway through the year 2023.  We have been working hard, hustling, and progressing towards our goals.  However, it is time for us to take a moment and reflect on these 6 months.

Why, you ask?

Well, when we are focused on our work we can often lose track of the progress we’ve made so far.  Reflecting on our professional and personal goals helps us assess our current situations and improves our performance. These goals could be anything from you wanting to maintain a healthy diet, learning new skills, focusing on self-growth, or your workplace performance. Be it your own company goals, projects, or your professional growth as an employee, we all have certain goals we work towards.

But, how can you track your progress, reflect effectively and create a new roadmap to improve? Here are a few steps that can aid you.

Step 1: Assess yourself

The very first thing you need to do is analyze your activities so far. Grab your planners, flip through them, and check your actions. Where do you think your problems lie? Define these problems and check for any wiggle room for improvement. However, while analyzing your activities do not just focus on the negatives. Pat yourself on the back for your little achievements as well.

Step 2: Create a roadmap

Once you’ve figured out where your problems lie, figure out some solutions. Now that you know how and where you can improve, create a roadmap. You can create a new plan on how to move further and improve your performance. For eg: if your team is working on a project and you are no closer to your work being done on time, reassess your situation and create a new plan to speed things up. Divide your responsibilities, communicate, and boost productivity.

Step 3: Work on your strengths and weaknesses

Now that you have assessed yourself and created a whole new plan, identify where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Work on your strengths and weaknesses and use this knowledge to help you achieve your goals.  Analyzing your strengths and weaknesses will enable you to gain an upper hand and improve your skills and abilities. Identify where your strengths could come in handy in achieving what you want. We all have shortcomings, you can always educate yourself to turn your weaknesses into strengths.  Once you know where your weaknesses lie, educate yourself and build on them.

Step 4: Educate yourself or Upskill yourself

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Find someone who is already good at what you want to be good at and ask for their help. You can always fill in your knowledge gaps and ask for training. You can also use your screen time wisely, by enrolling in webinars, courses, etc. (to know more check the bonus tips). Learning is an essential part of growth.

Step 5: Set Proactive Goals

Now that you have a better vision of how to move forward, set proactive goals. Grab your planner, and set 3 actionable goals every month. Make sure to divide them into mini-achievable goals. This should help you keep yourself on track and motivated. Setting proactive goals would help you achieve your goals faster.

Step 6: Practice Reflection

One of the reasons you might be behind on your goals is that you do not track your progress regularly. It is crucial to keep track of your progress. Make a habit of reflecting on your goals weekly or monthly.  Reflecting on your goals every week/month would help you identify where you go off-track and enable you to eliminate time-wasters.

Step 7: Imbibe Positivity

When we reflect on our yearly goals, it can be easy to focus on the negatives and feel demotivated. However, you have to realize reflecting on your goals is a positive activity. You have to have a healthy, positive mindset when you reflect on your goals to create a plan that is productive and effective.

Bonus Tips:

  • Celebrate achievements: Never forget to celebrate your achievements no matter how small they are. You’ve worked hard and you deserve to celebrate your efforts.
  • Invest in Self-improvement: Self-improvement enhances your self-confidence. Invest in learning more and widening your horizons. Take up seminars, and webinars, read books, biographies, autobiographies, or interviews, or listen to podcasts and audiobooks in your field of interest. No amount of knowledge is ever wasted.

We hope these tips have helped you reflect on your goals and given you a glimpse of how you can improve your performance to achieve your goals. We know you’ve got this. Also, once again take a moment to pat yourselves on your back and celebrate how far along you’ve gotten this year. It wasn’t easy but you’ve made it so far and you’ll achieve everything you’ve set out to.
